ROOTS BY LAND
The Roots Tour by Land: Journey to Kunta Kinteh's Ancestral Home
Step into history on this full-day land and sea expedition that traces the powerful story of Alex Haley's Roots. This journey offers an authentic exploration of the North Bank, blending road travel with river cruising.
Your Adventure:
River Crossing: We begin with a transfer from your hotel to the ferry terminal. Board a ferry to cruise the Gambia River to Barra (North Bank), a crossing where you may even spot dolphins!
Ancestral Village: Upon arrival in Barra, a minibus or Land Rover drives you through small villages to Albreda/Juffureh, the ancestral home of Kunta Kinteh. You'll visit the Slave Museum and spend time with the Kunta Kinteh family, creating a profound personal connection to the history.
Historic Island: Enjoy lunch at the Sunshine Root Restaurant on the beach, followed by a 25-minute boat cruise to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kunta kinteh (formerly James) Island.
Return: After visiting the island, you'll cruise back to the mainland, rejoining your transport for the final scenic ferry ride back to Banjul and your hotel.
