Journey to the old colonial heart of the Gambia, an island town on the River Gambia where history breathes from every wall. Journey to Janjanbureh (Georgetown), a historic island town on the River Gambia. Learn about the slave trade, colonial history, and incredible river wildlife.
Janjanbureh, known by its colonial name, Georgetown, sits on an island in the middle of the River Gambia and is one of the most historically significant towns in the country. Founded by the British in the 19th century, it served as a hub for trade and mission work and, unfortunately, as a holding point in the slave trade. Today its crumbling colonial buildings, vibrant markets, and warm island community make it one of the most rewarding and atmospheric destinations in the Gambia. The journey upriver through the Gambian countryside is itself an experience of rice paddies, baobab- dotted plains, and the changing light of the interior.
