Abuko Nature Reserve holds a special place in the heart of every Gambian naturalist. Established in 1968, this compact but extraordinarily rich reserve covers just 105 hectares yet contains one of the best-preserved patches of gallery forest in the entire country. Walking the well-kept trails, visitors encounter vervet and colobus monkeys, large monitor lizards, pythons, crocodiles in the natural pools, and an extraordinary array of over 270 bird species. For those new to Gambian wildlife, Abuko is the ideal introduction — accessible, diverse, and absolutely teeming with life from the moment you enter the gates.
