Crossing into Senegal
Day 8 crosses the border at Karang for Fathala Wildlife Reserve. A valid passport, and any required visa or entry documentation, should be carried at all times that day.

Is The Gambia safe to visit?
The Gambia is one of West Africa's more visited and stable destinations for tourism, with an established coastal resort area and a well-worn overland route to the interior. As with any trip, sensible precautions apply: travel with a guide outside the main tourist areas, keep valuables secure, and check your government's latest travel advice before departure, especially regarding the Senegal border crossing on day 8.
Do I need a visa for The Gambia?
Many nationalities, including UK, EU, and US passport holders, can enter The Gambia without a pre-arranged visa for short tourist stays, though this can change and should be confirmed before travel. This itinerary also crosses into Senegal on day 8 for Fathala Wildlife Reserve, so check Senegal's entry requirements for your nationality too, and carry your passport at all times that day.
What is the best time of year to visit?
The dry season, roughly November through May, is the most popular and reliable time to visit, with cooler, low-humidity days that suit game drives, boat trips, and walking excursions. December to February is the coolest and busiest window; March to May is hotter but quieter on the ground.

This is a moderate-pace trip. Most days combine a road transfer with a boat trip or a walking excursion of one to two hours on flat, sometimes uneven forest or reserve trails. No technical hiking or climbing is involved, and boat trips are seated and guided.
What wildlife might I see?
Across Abuko Nature Reserve, Kiang West National Park, the Halahin and Gambia rivers, and Fathala Wildlife Reserve, travellers commonly see primates, crocodiles, hippopotamuses, and over 250 recorded bird species, plus baboons, antelope and, at Fathala across the border in Senegal, giraffe and white rhino in a reserve setting.
